If they were accurate numbers from the IB site I would agree with your stance! :)

Here are the real numbers (from GreatSchools, which I believe they get from public record) and all of these schools will be considered "feeder" schools into the high school. This means that these kids get seats in the high school. I may be missing another couple of schools as well, but I'm sure of these.

Center for Inquiry 2: 347

Center for Inquiry 27: 369

Center for Inquiry 84 (Note: This school hasn't expanded to 8th grade yet): 206

Rousseau McClellan Montessori 91: 486

Butler Lab 60 (Note: This school hasn't expanded to 8th grade yet): 133

Francis W. Parker Montessori 56: 280

Merle Sidener: 324

Total Students: 2145

Estimate Total Students after expansion of all schools to 8th grade: 2400

Estimate Total Grades 5-8 (Amount of kids that will be in High School in 4 years): 1200

The hope is that many of these students will continue on into the IB school when they leave 8th grade instead of matriculating to Herron or North Central.

Of course, not all magnet kids will continue on to the IB program, but there will also be non-magnet kids from all surrounding schools that will hopefully find this as a good alternative. Also, they are looking at including 7th and 8th grade into Shortridge in the future. This allows two things...make better use of Shortridge space and increase the number of children that can attend the magnet elementary schools.

The IB schools (even though a few of them were only recently made "official") have been practicing the IB teaching method since inception.

Again, the goal is to provide high demand for a quality PUBLIC high school that will be available to all students regardless of income and that will keep our tax dollars in our public school systems instead of going to big corporations (Chamber of Commerce).

Re: FIRESTORM! I am wholeheartedly against the charter school movement. You have people generating big money off our our kids education. The more they cut back on costs per child, the more profit they make. This is why we need really good PUBLIC elementary and high schools. We're halfway there, there are some great top ranked IPS schools that are very well integrated and give everyone an equal chance. Unfortunately, this isn't at all schools yet but hopefully it's a step in the right direction. These elementary schools are bringing people into the district (me being one of them), and you don't want them to exit as soon as they enter 9th grade. I'll explain more about the numbers behind the math in a response to Jay's post above that should help explain why this move was needed.

Re: FIRESTORM! There is definitely more than meets the eye here. First of all, why would people who are charter school advocates want to server on a public school board? Secondly, the answer - follow the money. Public school is at risk, and we need to be aware of the real reason for moves like this one. There is a movement to shut down public education in favor of corporate run schools. Charter schools was the test. People drank the kool aid of believing there were better. Tax money is being used to support these schools, and in fact are becoming like the professional sports teams, where tax dollars pay for the facilities, get tax breaks, and the general public cannot afford to attend the games. Even to the extend of naming schools. Historically, that was not the way. Grade schools were given a number and named after, given the identity of some historic person. We now have a school named (branded) after a private institution. When this happens with sports facilities, at least they pay for the honor. New Orleans has already lost that battle. They no longer have traditional public schools. What happens when education is left to only a selection process for education students? Where does that leave those "not" selected? I have no problem with advanced programs, but as a tax payer, I have a problem with providing selective education at the expense of educating all students. Once again, Indiana has shown how those not powerful, or wealthy enough are fodder for sacrifice the elite.

Re: Is This Indy Star Cartoon On Immigration Bigoted, Inappropriate, Racist? It offers the IB Primary Years Programme and IB Middle Years Programme to 88 students. The school is state funded. The head of the school is Andrea Hunley.

CFI 27 (E 19th Street location) -- Center for Inquiry at School 27 has been an IB World School since September 2014. The head of the school is Jamilyn Bertsch.

CFI 84 (E 57th Street location) -- Center for Inquiry at School 84 has been an IB World School since August 2009. It offers the IB Primary Years Programme and IB Middle Years Programme to 87 students. The school is state funded. The head of the school is Christine Collier.

Gambold Prep (Kiel Avenue location) -- Gambold Preparatory Magnet High School has been an IB World School since February 2014. It offers the IB Middle Years Programme and IB Diploma Programme. The school is state funded. The head of the school is Shane O'Day.

Unless the local IPS IB Coordinators are remiss in submitting accurate, timely data to the International Baccalaureate Programme, the numbers simply are not there to support, to justify a designated, stand alone building like Shortridge High School.

Two of the IB Programmes have been in existence for less than one calendar year, Gambold's being authorized by the International IB Programme in Feb, 2014, and CFI 27's being authorized only 3 months ago in Sept, 2014.

Simply saying that such and so school is using IB principles in its delivery of instruction is an entirely different proposition than a school's authorization by the International Baccalaureate Programme and subsequently progressing through the PYP, the MYP, and the ultimate Diploma Programme where students either receive an IB Diploma or do not receive an IB Diploma based upon their scores/points from IB examinations, not some State assessment or local assessment, but an international assessment.

Give the local IB Programmes the requisite time to take a cohort of students through completion of the entire Programme, through administration of IB examinations, and then show proof of the absolute necessity of a stand alone large school plant to house the IB Programme(s).

Re: IPS Supt. Setting the scenario, Shortridge is a fine example of architectural design of a city high school and on the National Historic Registry, it's in a high-profile location on N Meridian Street, its image would make a stellar graphic presentation of Indy's historical relevance when placed on a slick brochure from the City or from the Chamber of Commerce in attracting new businesses to locate in Indianapolis. Of course, the image would always be more impressive if a group of scholarly looking students were casually hanging around the campus area that fronts Meridian. Bluntly speaking, the current 750+ Shortridge students simply do not meet that criteria.
